Is anyone else really disappointed at my generation's attitude towards music!

Question: For them, it isn't art: it's a commodity. They download the songs from "Guitar Hero" but never check out anything else the artist does. They don't read/think about the lyrics, they just slap them on their Ipods and carry on. In Hot Topic, they buy the shirts of bands they've never heard. For example, at my High School, everyone and his brother is wearing a Nirvana or Guns N Rose's shirt. But the only songs they can name are "Smells like Teen Spirit" and "Sweet Child of Mine". It's disgusting. If there's a Real Punk band on a game soundtrack, they don't bother to notice the energy, anger or lack of pretension; they just slap them next to Top 40 radio trash. Anyone else feel this way?

I understand what you're trying to say man. I'm 16 and I'm very dissapointed towards the majority of our generation's music style thats trendy right now. Most people nowadays from our generation just buy band shirts to look cool, or to think they're dark, scary souls that are in pain. Heh. Bunch of posers if you ask me if they know nothing about the band,or music, but just wear it to look cool. I especially hate most of the new generations "rockers" that dress "emo" because most of the ones at my school that I've met were all whiny people who are attention whores and do the stupidest things you can imagine. They mostly stay in the *mainstream zone* brought to you buy MTV, or the radio and never go past beyond that. Well let me tell them one thing. I don't look like a "Metal head" most of the time but being truly dark comes from the soul, not the fashion you wear. I have crazy thoughts that scare the hell out of them and they feel intimidated since I look normal. Despite the clothes they wear to pose. Lol. But I'm just sick of mainstream either way. Same here on the R&P section everyone always recommends the same mainstream things 9/10 times.

Your statements are depressing and disappointing indeed. I'm hoping for a better future then. May the minds, eyes and, most especially, EARS of today's generation be open that they may realize and appreciate TRUE ARTISTRY in the wonderful world we call --->>> MUSIC. May they not be driven by commercialism and mainstream-hip-mentality. May they be guided by art, by music.

Thank you for this!

I agree, too many people, and not just of your generation, see music and other entertainment media forms as a commodity instead of an art form. This lack of respect leads to entitlement attitudes in which they feel justified in stealing their entertainment in the form of downloading it from the net.

Maybe if they saw it as art they would understand the work that goes into each song and maybe they would be more willing to pay the artists who create the music.

It isn't just your generation. They exist in each generation. Don't worry, though. Each generation has its true fans, like us.

I like to think I know from whence you speak. I come from a much older generation myself. I dropped out of the music scene altogether after having been offered a contract in a studio as a back up musician. The whole music scene seems to revolve around marketing. The art of music and songwriting seems to have been turned into roadkill. I'm no musician. But I can smell one from a thousand miles away and am left disillusioned by what this new generations sucks up like a tasty milkshake.

I'm glad to hear this from someone half my age, because I'd be sure I sounded like a grandma if I were the first to say it. -- YES, I agree with you completely. I know *some* kids who care as much about the music they hear as we used to, but the vast number of kids I run across (traveling, at shows, etc.) seem as indifferent as the ones you describe. Is it just the fault of Internet culture making everything equally available and disposable, I wonder? Has the awful watered-down crap on the radio convinced people that music doesn't really matter anymore? And why is it more important to have the right pose (wear the 'cool' band shirt or whatever) than to actually care? Again, I'm not talking about the dedicated Goth, punk, psychobilly etc. fans, who are as earnest and committed as they ever were, but about the zillions of mall rats out there...I don't have a good answer for you, but I promise, you aren't the only one who sees it this way.

++ Well hello,I'm a proud rock and metal head I feel the same damn way too, but this isn't something that changes overnight. People now just thinks that way, and its just shame full, cause they are like : meant to hear what is "in style", and nothing else. And I'm gonna say something that for some of you may consider inappropriate. But its just the way I think. Some people, consider better bands the hideous covers and mtvs and vh1 crap music (like Avril lavinge, Rhianna, Britney spears music doesn't make sense at all I don't even call it music!)better than the "old school" ( Metallica, Guns& Roses, Megadeth, Dio, Dragon Force, Rhapsody,Queen, The beatles, Slayer, ). Bands that did make a change in what we call music now. I dont really see a "new band" that could really, make a statement like they did.. omg that really gives me the creeps cause it sucks O.O))

"For them, it isn't art: it's a commodity."

This has been true for over fifty years. It is not a new development. There's a reason Madonna and Celine Dion are among the top-selling performers of all time while the Velvet Underground don't even make the list.

i do!! i hate when people say that they love all of these bands, and then i look at their ipod, and they've got one (the popular one) song from each artist they say they "love" i love games like guitar hero, but i know where most of the music comes from, and i know most of the artists. as for the band tee thing, it seems that today people wear them because they want to look "vintage" because it's "in" they wear them not as a declaration that they love the band, but to make people think that they know music. it seems that many people don't know the difference between being a fan of a band, and being a fan of a song. the border between music and fashion is always getting thinner, and it's cool when people wear shirts from their favorite bands, but most people seem to do it because they've heard that "cool" people like that band, and they too want to be cool.

Yeah, that's depressing. I hate it when people do that, like the Nirvana one..they've only heard of Smells like Teen Spirit, but it isn't their best song, it was just the most popular, one of their less popular but better song is aneurysm. Its all about money nowadays, the days when music was appreciated artistically is in the past. I am hoping that this is just a phase and we will go back to listening to music and appreciating other works bands do, just not the popular ones..there are some hidden gems out there.
here's hoping for the better in the '08

yeah, its horrible
itll never change, though
