This is not an easy question to answer.... first and foremost, being a good singer depends on your vocal potential. People who are vocally disadvantaged such as having a raspy voice or are tone deaf are most likely to be unsuccessful as a singer to say the least. If you do not have such problems you may still have a glimmer of hope.

Secondly, choosing a good vocal teacher is obviously important. On a side note there may be books on how to sing but it is not recommended as such books tend to lack sufficient details on vocal techniques and one would find learning much easier with the help of a mentor as opposed to learning from a book. Anyway, you could start with your school choir or, if you have graduated, an adult choir. Again, joining a church choir is not recommended since church choirs may not necessarily implement vocal techniques which are crucial for your dream to become a better singer. You may consider hiring a vocal coach if and only if you have the money apart from your passion for singing.

The important thing to note is that even with professional vocal training one can take up to at least 2 years just to see a noticeable improvement in ones voice, so don't expect any instant results. Be prepared to spend a lot of money if you are thinking of having a vocal trainer. In short, it all depends on how much passion you have for singing whether you wish to commit yourself to a choir or a vocal coach.

Joining probably wouldnt, but having the extra coaching might. Maybe all you need is a voice coach, in a choir you wouldnt get much Grunge singing, and since that is the band you are in, that would be most beneficial....I would suggest a voice coach, it's more one on one anyway.

Joey, hot tea , lemon, and go in the basement and start singing along with records.

Yes, it will help you a lot, if you attend practice.

I think it would help. The chorus teaches you voice scales, and teaches you notes you can and can not reach. So, with the extra help of the teacher, your voice should become better.

if you listin to yuor teacher it will she will help you with breath suport and your range ...i say give it a try ...i love Chorus

Joining choir would develop your voice better. Sometimes with bands they'll sing the same way they've been singin they're whole life and end up injuring they're vocal cords (which according to my chorus teacher is very possible) and i know guys in my school in chorus who are in a band so i suppose it would help.
