What do the dials that say "gain" and "presence" do on my am!
Question: Gain is a Volume control, usually there is also another volume called "post" or " master" or "main".
Gain is the guitar signal at the front of the amp ( the signal from your guitar as it enters the amp imput). If it is down low, you get a clean guitar sound. But if you turn it up, at a point higher than that "main" volume mentioned earlier, a distortion starts to appear. To get a real Heavy Metal sound, turn "gain" up high, while turning "main" down lower.
"Presence" is a type of "tone" control that gives you a tonal sweep from " a little more bass" to "a
little more treble."

gain means distortion, the more you move it to the highest level the louder it will be
Gain gives you a louder heavier sound.
Gain is the control that overdrives the preamp.
It gives you preamp distortion.
If you've got a tube amp it'll sound like an amp turned up loud.
If you've got a solid state amp, It'll probably sound like a fuzz box.
If you have it turned down, it'll just seem like a volume control, until it's turned up enough to distort.
None of those is the same thing as getting tube power amp distortion.
Presence is the control that affects the treble and high mids.
It should change the way the treble control responds.
