Well, iit depends on what you really want. If you just want to sing and accompany yourself with the instrument, then you don't need to learn the theory right away. But even if you only learn tabs, it is good to understand at least something about chords. They are usually named by the lowest tone (on the thickest string), but this doesn't mean that this is the only way to use them. Sometimes they match well with the melody when the middle tone or the top tone matches the melody. It is something to explore.
The other thing is to know the difference between major and minor chords. It will save you a lot of time.

Eventually, if you want to learn really good playing, especially solo or fingerpicking, you will need more and more theory. But perhaps the best idea is to learn as you play and as your need increases.

Eventually, if you develop even further, you will arrive to the point where you will wish to have learned more theory if not all of it. Then you will know that you already are quite good a guitar player. I learned completely by ear and am now at this point. Still not completely decided whether I am satisfied with the accomplished level or do I want to plunge into classic guitar together with note reading and theory.

Enjoy your playing!

bro you try to study music theory for better understanding and it may help you more learning music and proceed playing guitar you its better to know the basics before you go through

If you're mostly looking to learn how to play other people's songs, all you need to learn is tablature, which is very simple (each line is a string, each number is a fret).

If you want to write your own songs, you ought to know at least a little about theory. It may seem a bit daunting at first, but once you start figuring it out a little, it's nothing. There are some great guides and instructions you can find all over the internet, just search on Yahoo. Searching +"music theory" +beginners should get you off to a good start.

It's not necessary, but you may want to learn theory when you start to get better. It will improve your playing then. Right now just learn how to strum chords. First things first.

Even as music theory looks hard, it isn't. In fact, it will make learning a whole lot easier if you understand (for example) WHY some notes go with others, and why some don't. I believe it should be a priority in learning ANY instrument, not just guitar.

I'd skip learning tabs altogether. Professional guitarists NEVER use them, and if you ever hope to become very accomplished, you will learn to read standard guitar notation. Personally, I wish the idiots who came up with tablature had never been allowed off their leashes.
