Speaking of 80's MTV...Who remembers "The Basement Tapes"?!
Question: [Inspired by Darth's Headbangers Ball and 120 Minutes question]
Real undergound bands (raw talent?) submitted their videos to the network. MTV would show the videos and viewers voted for the band they thought deserved a recording contract by calling an 800 number. Billy Crystal was Martha Quinn's co-host. Some great (and funny) stuff!

man, you guys are bringing back some memories....yes i remember that show...
remember all the mtv commercials for mtv and they would dress up the mtv logo for whatever holiday it was...for some stupid reason i remember the christmas mtv logo with all the lights on it.....im having flashbacks...remember the new years eve concerts every year with nina blackwood, triple j jackson, martha quinn, etc...
I did watch it occasionally, but never with any regularity. Did anyone ever make a career out of winning that contest? I don't recall any of those bands succeeding.
