I don't think it's the huge distinction that it's supposed to be - a musician winning a Grammy isn't the same as an actor winning an Oscar. It doesn't seem to have the same effect on the performer's career.
That's just my opinion, though.
People can choose to believe whatever they feel like. You can also believe that Rolling Stone is a credible publication, that Ashlee Simpson really does have talent and Avril is a fair representation of women in punk rock. Of course that doesn't make it true.
The Grammys are a shameful exhibition and very non-representative of the state of music at any given time. Remember, these are the same people who looked upon Jethro Tull as a metal band. They've been an absolute embarrassment as far as all forms of rock are concerned.
The Grammy's are great if all you care about is Top 40 and what's popular, otherwise it's the biggest joke going next to Rolling Stone magazine and the Rn'R Hall of Fame. Best example ever is Jethro Tull winning a grammy for best metal album (WTF?).
