Where do I start to try and get in the music business?!

Question: I know this sounds really cliche, but I really do think I have talent, and I have been told this. I even won a talent show. I am still in high school, and I plan on going to college in NYU, or any other college in NY (just to make my parents happy). Where/how do I start? My cousin is in the business... would that help?

Hi ima singer too , and i have a cousin who is in it with music too, he has toured with even chris brown here in australia. I really think you should use all of his contacts, but definatly start writing your own songs, and try to get them recorded. Then ask your cousin, if he knows any managers, be smart with who you send your stuff to. Try making a compressed showcase, this may cost money but think of it as an investment, in this show case put things like profesional pictures of yourself, videos,of you in the studio, and songs you have written/cowritten, after that, its out of your hands

High school is no where near as judgemental, mean, and biased as the entertainment world. Its not even so much about having talent these days, unless you are mindblowingly good, its about who you know and what your willing to do. Your best bet would be to learn an instrument and make a video, then post it on youtube and promote the hell out of it. Unless your cousin is a sony rep or an american idol judge, no, it wont help.

Just know that high school will not prepare you for the entertainment industry. You still have to work, work, and work more to break into the business. It's cold and shady so you have to look out. You basically start from the bottom up. I would get singing lessons, upload demos on the internet, promote the hell outta of them, and send them to record companies. It's not enough just knowing someone in the business. It's all about knowing someone who has a higher rank in it.

Also know that as a singer you will not have much freedom in writing your songs or anything when you start out. THe real money is in making beats and writing songs.

Try the shower. And please stay there.

Sure if you think you are that 1 in a million. If you really think that you have got what it takes you are gonna have to work real hard to prove it.Remember,in the states at the moment there are 20 million other kids who think the same as you do about their talent!!!
Get a demo tape knocked up and circulate it to anyone who you think can help you with a carreeer and be prepared for a lot of knockbacks over the next 5 or 6 years before you make it.

Just dont be the next ringtone rapper, please, we have too many already.
