Well, I'm not sure if this band classes as Metal or Rock {no one can give me a definate answer!}, but they are the only Goth band I really like :~

Type O Negative

I'm not sure quite what it is I like about them.
I think it's the overall combination of the lyrics and music, with Peter Steele's vocal style. And the fact that I feel able to relate to some of his lyrics.

Unlike most people, I didn't hear the band before buying an album. I liked the look of the cover on 'Bloody Kisses', and just decided to buy it!

Goth metal is just too dark and hateful for me. I can listen to easier going stuff just not goth metal.

I like it because I think it's beautiful. I like the operatic vocals and use of violins and pianos in the music. I prefer the female fronted gothic metal bands but over all I just like that kind of music, it has nothing to do with satan or anything like that. Just because someone is exploring the darker side of music doesn't mean it is any less beautiful or meaningful.

i think some people just dont have a taste for it. i mean i lke all music and i do like some goth metal. i guess it just doesnt strike their fancy

I think that because gothic music, or any music in that group isn't as popular as hip hop, or pop. and people like what they're exposed to. most people aren't exposed to the dark side of music, personally for me once i first heard like job for a cowboy, marilyn manson, mushroomhead even slipknow i wanted to go hide under my pillows.. it just takes some getting use to. most people don't give that type of music a chance though, also dark music has a lot of critism.

I sort of like it as it is different with organ and really heavy guitar rifts and if I am ever angry its good music to just let go with but I do not definetly listen to it alot because I'm rarely angry. I've also learned it's great before any sports event as it gets you pumped, I used it espically for football, to be honest I don't like lyrically talking about killing someone etc. or w/e as not by I am offended but I would rather stay positive an d have no problem and just listen to music that realxs. Thats just my personnel opinion.

You know you are in America so people always have something to say about evey little thing. Alot of people that I have meet are afraid of that kind of music. They have told me that it is because of the screaming and gorring. The music is extreme but if you like it then screw them.

Because you can't expect everyone to like every single music genre out there. Some people love Gothic metal, while others hate it; it's just personal taste.

Edit; I like some Gothic Metal but I prefer Gothic Rock personally. I /love/ Type O Negative, they're very individual, I love Peter's voice, great musicianship; I just think they're very talented.

i like it because i can feel some of what the singer or band is trying to convey. i also like the operatic vocals and use of different instruments. i'm a fan of bands who like to use different techniques to make music plus they are artfully done and i love that. i've tried to listen to pop and rap and hip hop but the lyrics are so horrendus and don't make me feel what the singer is trying to convey so i've come to be disappointed by that side of the music industry. i mean i love jpop and jrock even though the words are in japanese the singers voice, music and over all presence put into the music makes up for not understanding the words and thats what i like about gothic metal music as well they can put everything into the words, music and presence that you feel what the vocalist feels.

Well it really depends on what kind of "Gothic" music you listen to. I dig bands like Nightwish because of the amazing vocals, beautiful web of classical instruments and music that flow through the music, and incredible guitar and drums. "Gothic" music touches a very dark and passionate side of music that can only be appreciated by few people. I'm not sure I know why that is, but my guess is that it doesn't fit in with the superficial pretense that most people try to hide themselves in because they fear coming to terms with who they really are and what life can really be about. As you said, most gothic music focuses on life, just not the aspects that every other genre does.

Heavy Metal in general is rather hated, isn't...
Christian by religion and a heavy metal fan I had my share of prejudice and nagging.
People often don't want to know because they fear that knowing something and learning about it might destroy their set of beliefs. They are afraid to know. It's more comfortable to just sit back and fuel those prejudices even more. That's true about other musical styles, cultures, religions....

Uhm, I think that goth is life style. It has nothing to do with the music I listen to. There's a goth club out in SF that all my cronies kick it at and I cant stand it because the music is terrible. It's a lot like listening to mariachi music for me in the since that the "beats" (or lack there of) all sound the same. Often you cant hear or understand the lyrics. When I'm there I often have trouble figuring out when one song ends and the other begins. It just all runs together and I feel like I've been listening to the same song for hours. To me, and call me ignorant if you like, but it doesn't sound very original. I've heard a lot of goth bands cover a lot of Rolling Stones songs (oddly enough) and it seems like they are all trying to immitate Peter Murphy (Bauhaus) or Marilyn.
I just don't think that "goth" needs it's own music. While I understand that goth has no active purpose ( I mean punks have a purpose in anarchy and hippies want to keep the peace, and we don't have any politica; or moral stand to back our reasoning for a subculture except the sheer fact of our love of the dark side) do we need a theme? We cant be goth and just listen to what we like? If you like it then more power to you, but its a way of life for me not a type of music.

its too dark and noisey for me., and i dont like the way that the lyrics are presneted

More often than not, people dislike goth music because of stereotypes.. they believe it to be all about the devil and witchcraft and who knows what else.

However, there are people who have given it a shot, like myself, and found it simply doesn't appeal to their taste.
