Well, to answer this I'm going to copy and paste a few extracts from a post I made on another topic here.

"Attitude should be taken into consideration too. At it's core, metal is about honestly expressing yourself and offering social commentary in some way or other. "Being true" is very important. Being true can be considered "not selling out" and staying in touch with the reality of the world around you and your artistic integrity.

This is because "getting rich" means mainstream appeal and success. Metal is music which by it's nature can't truly appeal to a mass audience in the same way as Britney Spears can - Why? Because metal is about subject matter and a mindset which most people refuse to accept; problems with capitalist society, the unreliability of authority figures in that society, the bad effects of materialism, the idea that the world isn't well. It often therefore suggests that an artist has surrendered their integrity and changed direction when they suddenly get rich and buy their own island.

At this point I should stop and make something clear. There is a difference between "True Metal" and what music channels like MTV will tell you are metal.

Nu Metal? You may know this is "MTV metal" or "kiddie metal". Bands like Linkin Park, Korn, and Slipknot (yes, Slipknot are Nu Metal in every way shape and form) fall into this category. Nu Metal is actually a term for these bands created by the music industry to try break into the (generally very closed) metal market. It has nothing to do with actual metal, it's instrumental techniques come from various forms of punk, and it's lyrics and imagery are generally targeted at a young teen market, with an over-abundance of merchandise being put out as standard.

It's working, too. Look at all the little Slipknot fans in their tight black pants, with their Slipknot hoodies, shoes, and lunchboxes, and black eyeliner think they're metal as hell?

Finally Metalcore, and "Deathcore"

Metalcore; Elements of metal mixed with elements of "Hardcore punk". In all ways except vague instrumental influences, they are still Hardcore punk. The same goes for "Deathcore" (i..e Job for a Cowboy), the difference being that as far as the metal influences go, it comes from death metal as opposed to say, Thrash.

It's often said that "labeling is bad". Well in Metal labeling serves to draw the lines between various genres and prevent outside influences from "corrupting" the essence of what metal is, in its music and it's attitude. Close minded you say? Bad for artistic innovation? Well, no. Artists will always be innovative, music will always change, the point is really that something is preserved rather than limited. For example, when someone decides they want to mix rap with Death Metal, they're entitled to. But it'll be considered something else, a different genre. Allowing it to be labelled "Death Metal" would mean that existing, traditional Death Metal would be at risk of being lost, and at the same time something of the spirit and essence which has been along with it all along."

It may be called a "fusion" of Metal and Hardcore, but essentially it's still Hardcore with some subtle Metal influences on the instrumental work. If anything it's a variant of Hardcore, not of Metal.

At the same time it doesn't have the same "spirit" as Metal. It comes from a very different place, a different background with different ideals and so on, i.e. the whole Punk / Hardcore Punk thing.

Why is it considered emo? Well, the image mostly. Hardcore punk and Emo bands often have a lot of similarity appearance wise and this will often be brought into Metalcore. There can be further confusion because "Emocore" apparently exists as a genre too, and blurs the lines occasionally

i dont consider it emo
Metalcore is the union of Hardcore punk and metal, maybe the hardcore part has been mistaken.
Its a metal subgenre. It isnt fake

well maybe it has an emo touch, cuz emo genre comes from punk being hardcore emo a subgenre of this. But emo emo i dont think so....

I never said it wasnt metal, I just said it's not good. I can barely find any good metalcore bands. Many sound way too emo also.

alot of metalheads consider it emo cause alot of our kinda bands have heartfelt lyrics and arent just about death, dying, bleeding, or stuff like that
now, im a TRUE metal fan, i love VITAL REMAINS, NILE, CHILDREN OF BODOM,
but bright eyes and boys night out are my favorite bands

learn to be versatile guys
=]

i think that metalcore was designed to make metal "easy", that's why its sooooo mainstream and youngsters(but not me) are sooooo crazy about it(reasons include: easy to play/compose on instruments, fad, popularity of band members etc etc).....these stuff are NOT what a real metal musician or fan looks for. Metal was not meant to be easy!

Metal was meant for the people who feel and understand every bit of their music down to their groins and not for people who just wanna look "cool" (i meant hardcore/metalcore/emo kids hehehe)

and that's the main reason( i think) as to why poser bands called it "metalcore"...they wanna stick with metal guys, who are considered "the gods of music"/the cool guys inside and out, while they(metalcore) lazy away with all the metalcore music they make, contented with the fact that metal guys are pissing all over them everytime they do an album or a show.....

can't they just call it "core"?
