If you listen to the album "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere" by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, you can see who truly influenced the Seattle bands from the early 90's. Neil has never labeled his music with Crazy Horse as "grunge", he prefers to call it "garage". The album "Ragged Glory" was released in 1990, before most of the country had ever heard of a little band called Nirvana, and was recorded in a barn-like studio on Neil's farm. It is probably his "grungiest" album.

I never understood the Neil Young/Pearl Jam collaboration because musically, Eddie Vedder could not carry Neil's Jock strap. Neil is just a nice guy and has always been interested in helping out other artists.

Because he was doing the basic grunge sound as early as 1969. By the late 70s, it was there, just that the term "grunge" hadn't been invented yet.

hints of it on 'Cinammon Girl'

all there on Sedan Delivery", etc.

Also, people were saying he had the grunge "look" way before the 90s. The loose, unbuttoned plaid shirts, torn up jeans, etc...

because he was...

they all learned from his stuff...

if you listen to some of NY's stuff now, youd think it was made in the early to mid 90s

well when grunge became popular i think people looked bak and said neil young had kind of a similar haunting sorrowful kinda of sound. my dad tells me that he kind of went through phases and at one point he was really into a more rockin fuzzy kinda sound. but nirvana was influenced by eighties punk/alternative like the pixies and pearl jam is just terrible

His songs had the characteristics of what would later be grunge. Distorted rough guitars... ECT.

...because of the plaid shirts...but then again, that was part of the Canadian uniform...

because some say he invented grunge. Playing melodic, but highly distorted music, and the unkempt image (messy hair, etc)
