When you are listening to bands and deciding if you like them...?!

Question: is originality something that you take into consideration?

Answers: is originality something that you take into consideration?

it depends. Sometimes i automatically decide i like a band within the first minute. But sometimes i have to listen more closely and then i usually listen to the guitar player and sometimes the lyrics but lyrics aren't usually that important to me.

Yes, its quite important! Along with how well they are at channeling it.

yes. i like different sounds. some bands all sound like the same generic pop punk or screamo music. i like different voices and instruments.

Originality, lyrics, and most importantly the chorus.

Definitely.
To me, there are many different levels of good music— originality, catchyness, creativity, whether or not the instruments are played well, etc. A band that I love may have one or all of these.

There's no point liking something just because it sounds like everything else. Originality is an important quality for music to have.

Songs that have a really unconventional structure (as opposed to the traditional "verse, chorus, verse, chorus, chorus, chorus" structure) tend to catch my attention, though it doesn't necessarily mean I'll like the song. I don't think I listen for originality in particular, because often I'll listen to a song, and it's really weird, and it seems like the band had a lot of good, original ideas, but it's not well executed. It just has to sound good. Creativity is great, but you just have to know how to use it.

Without a doubt. I don't want the same thing over and over again. If it has the same sound as another band I write them off, as a wannabe. Creativity is part of art.

nope, I could pretend to sing in Japanese and have a recorder as the sole instrument of a song, that would be original as well as awful
Good is all that matters, same tired three chords keep making great songs,
an example
867-5309(Jenny) by Tommy Tuttone goes Am-F-C-G
so does Apologize by One Republic

Yes. Originality is like the bands fingerprint. It is thier specific style that can only be thier own. Bands that sound like everything else is just like they have no fingerprint.

P.S.- You can tell if you really like a band when you piss yourself everytime you hear them.

how brutal the breakdowns are.
originality is nice.

Without a doubt. That's why I listen to progressive metal more than pop rock. Bands like Dream Theater, Evergrey, and Vanden Plas.

Yes. It's very important. But I also listen to the lyrics. They really make up the song but so do all the beats and instruments and the vocals. Everything has to sound good mixed together or else it's just a big mess to me.

Yes, but not really. I usually listen to the singer's voice. If the voice is original, or different and distinct, chances of me liking the band go up about 99.9%.

yea.. if they sound like every other band what would be the point of listening to them

I guess.

I think lyrics are important.
Along with vocals, guitars, bass and drums.

It also adds bonus points if someone in the band write their own songs (like Paramore) and then they explain what or why they wrote that song.

of course

No, all guitar bands have to sound like Coldplay and Radiohead with weird, effette, James Blunt type vocals or it's not proper music.
