Singing musical theater?!

Question: So...I'm wanting to audition for Godspell, but I've got a very classical sound. I've been working on developing it for about 7 years. When I try to sing O bless the lord from the show, it's not right. When I sing, it's either head voice or chest voice. That middle area is tough for me. I have been told that I should be doing a mixed voice. I have no idea what to do. If someone can help me out that would be great! Thanks

Hi Cassie,
I've done a few productions of Godspell, and in each one the gal who sang Bless The Lord had a belt style, all chest voice. That's not how you sing now, and it isn't how I sing either. Some people's voices suit that sort of song, but from what you've written I don't think you should try to sing this song unless you have to. My suggestion would be Day by Day, By My Side, or On The Willows. This way the light and tone of your voice will shine through. Best of luck with your audtion!

7 years of developing as a Classical singer may be hard to change, but I would recommend you add more air to your sound. Singing classically, you add a lot of power to your voice that put an edge on singing show tunes. You need the breathing control, but not all the power.

Pick an easy song and sing it with more air, and sing it like you are telling a story. Record it to tape, and listen to yourself. I am sure you can hear what the differences, and will give you a good feel as to what you need to work on to get the sound right.
