Looking to expand my music collection?!

Question: I mostly like pop, classic rock, techno/dance, alternative, a bit of classical (though I don't know the names of the more well known ones), R&B, a bit of oldies music and hybrid genres(e.g. Stronger by Kanye West). I don't really like System of a Down, Metallica, Paralyzer.

Some artists I prefer:
Backstreet Boys
Cascada
Hannah Montana
Bon Jovi
Green Day
All American Rejects
Fergie
Rihanna
Maroon 5
Ricky Martin
50 Cent (select songs only)
Billy Talent

My iPod currently only has 293 songs, I hope to reach 400 as I am going on a trip and need lots of music or I'll be bored on the plane.

Mainstream music is preferred, though indie is acceptable too.

Thanks!

What I use when I want to expand my music collection, is a website called liveplasma.com. You type in the name of an artist/band, or the name of a movie/director and it shows you related ones in a mind map.

Its very easy to use and often I have found that it often finds one of a similar genre. If after doing that a few times, you find the same artists keep coming up - in which case you can take a listen of them.

The closer they are, the more related they are.

For instance, if you put in Bon Jovi, you can see in the immediate circle, Guns n Roses, Aerosmith, Def Leppard etc.

Then as you go further away, you get Van Halen, Poison etc.

Then if you like a band...you can click on one of those and see what those link to and so forth. Meanwhile in the left hand corner there are the artist's various albums.

Clicking on one of those will take you to an amazon link, which usually has a sound sample of some of the songs of that artist.

You can also search it by country, so you can change it to America, UK, France, Germany and Canada...so depending on where you are searching, may give different results as some bands may not have reached international status.

I hope this helps.

Hm, I can give you some of the poppier indie stuff, since you prefer mainstream.

Stars - "dream pop"
Belaire - synth pop
Tegan & Sara
The Go! Team - general mixmash of poppy energy
Ratatat - catchy guitar instrumental rock, they have really good rap remixes too
Rogue Wave - pop/rock
Feist - heard/like the 1234 ipod commercial?
Tokyo Police Club - post-punky

If I can recommend some "classic" bands/albums, if you give them a listen, you'll probably enjoy them.

The Beatles- "Revolver"
Fleetwood Mac- "Rumours"

Also, check out the bands "Postal Service", "Death Cab For Cutie" and "Franz Ferdinand", I think if you keep your mind open, you'll like them.

This is going to sound more snobbish than I actually intend but I'm not really sure why you address your question to a classical music site. Classic Rock may be classic to those who like it but ... with great respect ... it is not classical music.
I believe that High Art is a fact and not simply a snobbish perception. This applies throughout the arts and not just to music. I don't like Picasso because I don't understand him; I would never be foolish enough to say that Picasso is rubbish.
Being a lot older than you I like the music of the Everly Brothers, Elvis, Roy Orbison, etc, etc but I would never pretend ... not I think would they ... that they represent High Art. They were ... and still are for me ... great entertainment. But is it truly great music? Compared with with the great composers ... I think not.
You say you like a bit of classics. That indicates taste! Listen a bit more. Soon the music will invade your soul and you will remember the names. A new world of musical experience awaits you. Go for it!
