I've heard that a lot of performers, pop and rock as well as hip-hop, don't make too much off of thier music. It's the studios that make the money. The endorsements etc. are what pay the bill for the performers. I don't know if that's true.
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with making endorsements. If some fans think that endorsing a sneaker, an energy drink, or whatever means you sell out, they'll stop listening, but new fans in the mainstream will take thier place. I think every perfomer realizes when they sell out. I've seen folk artists sign with major lables, then ditch the contract-for a good reason!
I aso think there's AWAYS going to be an underground to turn to for the "real" fans (again this applies to all genres, not only hip-hop!).
