What is the best way of distributing my CD to the public?!
Question: I have produced my first cd in the techno house music genre and it has bar codes on the back and is a legal copywrited mix. Where do I start on the distribution of this cd.

Look for locally owned Record stores in your town and write up a simple statement of intent for the owner, saying that you would like to sell your cd on their shelves in exchange for ... that part is up to you. Put your music up on myspace > snocap and there's a bunch of other sites that are free with no strings attached where you can sell individual songs or whole cd's as downloads. If you have the knowledge to set up a website where you have sole control of the distribution of your physical cd, not just downloads. Have that website set up so people can order from you directly. Paypal is the most trustworthy way to pay anybody online for any thing, so if you have a paypal button, you're more likely to get orders. Myspace is a tremendous tool for getting your cd heard and sold online. If you don't already have one, create a musician's account on myspace and then start uploading your best stuff, check all your account options so people aren't just downloading your songs for free, and then go on the hunt for friends. The more friends you have, the more people are listening to your music. I know people who have gotten gigs because of myspace and the networking power of it.
If you want to concentrate on physical cd sales then bottom line, you need to get gigs, DJ your music and sell your cd's at the show. A really good show = better cd sales. You probably already know this though. Good luck with your biz. =]
Start by finding people at clubs who dig it and hook'em up with free copies and tell'em to spread the word. Start a website where you can post samples. As your site gets hit up, post messages that the CDs will be available for purchase soon. Have a message board where they can ask when it's going to drop. When they start begging, make it available for purchase. It's a long process but look at bands like Sublime. They pushed all their own music and ended up the biggest scene in Cali for years. You can find some hot night clubs and get the dj to play it, and also tell everyone it's available, you could put some samples out on the web, at places like youtube and on a myspace profile, and then have a link to buy it. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
You might want to try a company called CD baby. they sell cd's online.. and they do sell a LOT of beginners and/or Indie bands..
