I listen to A LOT of music and I know a lot about it, for a 12 year old. I listen to a lot of music of a lot of genres and I know what topics each genre mainly covers.
Write about WHATEVER comes into your mind. if a lyric
comes in to your mind, write it down, you could use it. If some
kind of tune or jingle comes into your mind, try to write that down or tab it etc.
Music all comes from INSPIRATION. Get inspired. Sit on a bench like a bluesman and watch the people go by. it is inspiring.
It also depends on your genre too.
If you are a dark band then write about death, if you are a punk band write about politics, if you're an emo band write about how much you hate life and your girlfriend dumped you etc. Grunge, you would write about just about anything. If you are blues, you write about the woman that you want. Each genre seems to have its own, like, topic. Listen to bands to get inspired, listen to what kind of music you wanna play.
The best way to get inspired is to listen to your favorite bands, and like I said, experiences in life like the people walking by, the girl you want, politics.... I could go on, write whatever comes to your mind.

The best songs are about just...everyday things. My favorite song in the WHOLE world is "Loose Lips" by Kimya Dawson. I love it because it's so real and also so random at the same time. Check out the lyrics at:

sometimes lyrics don't matter at first..metallica makes the music first then lyrics later...elton john had the lyrics given to him and he just hit the piano..so it can work either way ..the main thing is...in my opinion,if you feel deeply about it weather it is sheer madness,or fluffy pop...then let it out,and others will feel it too
