Yes a BASS guitar is the sole rhythm of your music if you take away the BASS you might as well take the drums and everything else with it....Now if you are trying to start a Ska band then trumpets are definitely the way to go...at least two horns or more get some Mighty bosstone cd's and rock them loud...And last your band name should fit the type of music you play and the bands persona

If you're more interested in recording than touring, you can probably mix MIDI bass--and for that matter, a MIDI trumpet--into the mastered recording.
I don't know enough about touring to give terribly helpful advice, but college campuses and coffee houses might be good starting points.
