James "Jimmy" Ervin Porter (Steel Guitar): Born: 3/11/28 Died: 12/21/07 Hoover, AL.
Bio: Jimmy was the youngest (13 yrs. old) member of the Drifting Cowboys when he was hired by Hank in early 1941 (replacing Boot Harris). He played in the band mostly on weekends. Jimmy left Hank in mid 1944.

After leaving the band he joined "Dad" Crysel & The Royal Hillbillies and stayed until 1947. After graduation from high school, he immediately went to Nashville where he began working with Curly Fox & Texas Ruby (May 1947). In 1948 he enlisted into the Army Air Force and stayed for two years.

Mr. Porter is a unassuming man who has never used his position as a former Cowboys to get fame. He never longed for the limelight. He is the proud grandfather of five. In 2002 he wrote and published a book about his career called "My Life as a Musician".
