a no-count, sharecropping colored man

the one that didnt turn your back on the hungry white child with no name

In History, he served as a botswains mate on the "Philadelphia", under the command of Lt. Decatur. During action in Tripoli Harbor (Barbary Wars) he took the blow from a scimitar by throwing his arm in front of the blade to save Lt. Decatur. During the War of 1812 he also served on the "Constitution" and the "Congress" under Capt. Decatur. He was captured and later released by the British, where he continued to serve under Capt. Decatur until declining health from his many battle injuries forced his retirement in 1836.
There have been several U.S. Naval Ships that have also been named after Botswain Reuben James, including the Destroyer Reuben James that was hit and sunk by a German U-Boat in WW2.
In the Kenny Rogers song he was just some share croppin colored man that would steal anything he can.

He was a share-cropping colored man,by Kenny Rogers

I am going with Hope and Roni on this one. It does say that the people of Madison County called him a no account colored sharecropper and that they placed the blame on. But yet, the child, now grown obviously admired and loved them and saw him for what he was by the callouses on his hands and the sweat on his brow from plowing the land. Also that he took him in when no one else would. He states that he loved him now and he loved him then. That may be a major line in the song (no-account colored share cropper) but it is not the main basis for the song. It is the boy's love for who he was as a person. He died in the fields toiling the land. Not the picture of a thief.
