From my personal experience, good singing is usually inborn. You either have it or you don't. But that doesn't necessarily mean that you can't learn to sing well. One of my actor collegues could only sing 3 out of tuen notes in a raspy voice ten years ago. But with 10 years of hard work, perseverance, an amazing voice teacher, he is now singing arias and operattas that would probably make Pavarotti smile if he were still alive today.

If you're serious about becoming a professional singer, it's hard work! Here is what you need:

1. You will need a good and honest singing teacher who is very knowledgeable about singing techniques and exercises. Finding a great teacher is very very important and is an excellent investment.

2. You must take care of your health. Drink lots of water. Avoid caffeine and cigarettes. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Listen to your body. Certain foods can affect your body (particularly mucus production in your sinuses) without you realizing it as the cause. One of my teacher finds that eating wheat causes flare-ups in her sinuses. I discovered that cow's milk does it for me.

Milk, chocolates and anything sweet and sugary (and that is including soda) is a definite no-no. Especially if you're going to sing. Reserve those treats when you're not going to sing. It'll cause mucus in your sinuses and throat to build up and thicken and can hinder your singing.

3. Daily vocalizations is very important. Crap builds up in our sinuses and other cavities inside our skulls that are responsible for voice resonance naturally, even if you avoid foods that exacerbate mucus production. Vocalizing daily, even if it's just singing in the shower or singing in the car on your way to work help drain all that crap to the back of your throat. When you vocalize or sing and hear a "metallic" resonating sound in your hear, that means you're doing it right, you're hitting your resonnance.

Sometimes that will make your ears itch a bit, or there'll be a weird gurgling noise (sorta sounds like white noise from the TV or radio) when you hit a certain note. That's actually a good sign. It means that the crap in your sinuses are being forced to move around (and eventually drain) from the vibrations you are creating.

4. Stretching exercises. Not many people realize this, but tension from your neck, shoulders and back can greatly affect your singing. Remember that your vocal chords are muscles, your tongue is a giant muscle, your mouth and your lips are controlled by your facial muscles, and your diaphragm is the most important muscle for singing. All those muscles are connected directly or indirectly to each other. Tension in them can greatly hinder your ability to to sing.

Good luck!

Firstly, to get a good tone in singing, you need to get your resonance. Resonance is felt as something ringing in your head. You should be able to feel your head spinning when you achieve resonance. You should also use your diaphragm to support what you are singing, not just using your throat. You can try practicing with a piano to get your pitching right at first, then try practicing without one when you feel more confident about your pitching. Practice makes perfect! :D
