Why don't other teens like classical music?!

Question: I'm 15, and probably one of about 10 kids in my school that like Mozart and Schumann. A good portion of the rest of the kids try to be black by listening to gangsta rap. Sometimes I think the only reason they don't like it is because modern pop-culture tells them it's for old people. And old people suck, right?

Most teenagers listen to music to feel the energy. To those who haven't been taught how to listen to classical music, a lot of it can seem lifeless. I think it has to do with hearing something different. When a classical musician listens to rap, they're more likely to listen for melody and harmony, call and response. Fans of rap are more likely, I think, to listen to beats, syllabic rhythms, and lyrics. Some people will always desire the feel of rap. Some may develop a taste for classical later, perhaps when they begin to listen to music to relax instead of to expend energy. Classically trained musicians are pretty much stuck listening like a musician. That doesn't mean classical will always be the only thing that sounds good but that different qualities in the music will appeal to different people. This isn't just true for musicians. Some people will, for whatever reason, prefer to listen to melody and harmony, even if they don't have the musical training to know what it is about the music that they like. If you've ever tried Pandora Radio, they analyze the music you like and tell you what your probably like about it, generating a playlist of songs that share those elements. We all like different things and we also hear different things when we listen to the same music.

because they want to be in the times and don't like the oldies

aaah, i like classical music too (i'm 16). but i guess why many other teens don't is cuz they don't think it's "cool" and probably think it's boring (cuz there's no words, i guess?).

I think you ahve nice music taste in some ways. But i think they like gangsta rap is because they wanna be cool or want to be the next best thing... they are just a bunch of wanna bes also because they don't like how it has no words... they need to grow up who wants to listen to a 90 yr old listening to rap? ? Exactly i thought nobody before long it will be them that is old and the teens then won't like there music

It's a lack of maturity. Later on in life the teens widen widen their selection and listen to it. That's if they haven't become totally braindead listening to the constant crap that put out today. Long live Rock n Roll and Mozart.............

i love classical music it makes u calm and relaxed i listin to it all the time manly when i am stressed though
and most teens think that classical music is boring and most teens like songs with words that they can memorize honestly i do not know why more teens do not listin to classical music :)
PS i play the violin

You are right. Classical music is not regaded as "cool" hence the lack of popularity.

Rap may be rubbish but it is "cool".......for the moment.

PS Plus you can learn how to rap in a week but to play classical music on an instrument takes years which is too much like hard work for most people.

This sounds like my school!! I think they don't like it because it's not...abrasive enough for them. It doesn't have that edge to it. And it's tough for people to relax - classical almost forces the listener to do so, and it's almost as though some people just don't want to...

Most people don't like classical music because...

a) They haven't been exposed to enough (How many highschoolers have heard of Poulenc or The Firebird Suite....) classical music is a HUGE and diverse category of music.

b) They are used to songs that are 2-5 minutes long, not 20 to 30.

c) Understanding the history behind the composition is very important to understanding some classical music.

d) They are overwhelmed by big symphony orchestras with so much going on at once.

I disagree. It's just the influence teenagers get in the society these days. How many advertising or video hits you see on T.V has classical music featured in it? Old people enjoys it because they were influenced at their time to enjoy this type of music and not because they are old.

Classical music was written in a different time period probably in a different culture than yours. It's harder for the mass population to relate to something like that. Teens use music to bond socially so there are only so many styles that are effective for that.

It's their taste. Non of your business. You know that you listen to stuff far more sophisticated and that you're gradually training your ears. If they want to listen to crap, let them do it. You just delve deeper and deeper in the classical realm and let them float in those deep waters of ignorance and negligence!

I'm 15, I love classical. I think the problem, at least at my school, is that most people are to musically inadequate to listen to an orchestra and take in all the parts. They also want something with an easier-to-find beat. Either way, classical is better than gangsta rap.

Frankly, I do not know. This is a matter of opinion, but I consider classical music far more superb than any other kind of music. To be able to orchestrate music in a large scale requires an incredibly deft mind.

For the record, I am an 18-year old violinist who prefers Mahler, Mozart, Beethoven and Berlioz over rap or pop.

You are mostly correct in your thoughts.
Many teens don't understand the world of classical music and I think it's a shame--but most would rather fit in and listen to mainstream music.
Not only that, what they've been exposed to regarding classical music has taught them to associate classical music with boredom....it's even taught to them in commercials. The lunchables commericals are pretty notorious for it....it annoys the piss out of me. They don't know what's out there in the classical world.
The last stereotype I can think of is that only "nerds" listen to classical music or play an instrument, and "no one wants to be a nerd."

Be proud that you appreciate classical music. Use the opportunities you have to expose others to the world of classical--film scores (Secret Agent Man, 007, Superman, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc), cartoons use classical music, and even Aaron Copland is a big hit.

Not only that, without classical music there'd be no rap:)

In order to enjoy classical music, it generally requires an understanding of music and how it works - it is not for people who don't want to think. It is an acquired taste as well. It is hard for young people to appreciate the beauty of classical music beacuse it is so complex. They don't understand any of the underlying themes in the music because there aren't any lyrics that spell it out for them. That's my theory anyway. I'm 17, and I enjoy classical music - but I've played viola since I was 8 so I've had more exposure to classical music. My mom was intent on me appreciating it.

Generation gap, I think. Add the fact that most kids don't have friends or even parents or anybody else around them who listen to classical.

I'm 17, I study the violin, and I play Kundimans (Filipino love songs) and, when I get them right, a bit of Western classical. Quite frankly I have not met another one near my age who listens to classical; the nearest was a friend who's into heavy metal. He told me he believes once you do classical, you can do pretty much everything else.

Even in the big university where I study, kids who know kundimans or other classical stuff are rare--except of course in the College of Music. But outside, I haven't. I've even met one who wishes to be a composer in the mainstream who says what I play is not gonna be appreciated by many.

Old people don't suck. My, such naivety on the youngsters' part, if that were so!

ok. im 13. i can play piano, and i like to play classic music.
it's in indonesia. in indonesia also like that. i found only some of my friend that like classic music. actually i also like pop music. but classical music is very good. the best from all kind of music.
my friend think classical musing is boring. but i think it's very interesting and very soft.
