How early should you turn up at a music festival?!

Question: I'm going to Soundwave in Melbourne. Never been to a festival before, just wondering how early I should be turning up.

Gates open - 1PM
Bands start - 2PM

get there early, I'm not sure how early other people are showing up though sorry

maybe ask someone you know who has gone before

If it's a really big band or whatever, show up hours early.
If not, maybe and hour, hour and a half

5 hours before at the least to get a chance to argue and sing a few tunes with your friends.

if your whole day is open i suggest getting there asap... bring something entertaining to do though.... possibly a gameboy or a cassette player (do u remember those, i think they are called ipods now)

I'm with Justin on this one.. People are going to turn up as early as about 6am to get good spots, so if you want a good spot somewhere up the front that's the around about the time that you'd be looking at getting there.

I am going to Nightwish and I'm going to be there from about 1pm, even though the doors won't open until about 7pm, possibly later.

Early to get the beat seats if general admission and best parking and to drink before get into the show because alcohol is always more expensive in the festival. Enjoy the show!!

Do you know what times the bands you want to see start? If you know then show up about 30 minutes before the first band you want to see starts. If they havent posted a schedule or anything then show up 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes because you never know. I heard stories of people going to Warped Tour only to see NOFX and turns out NOFX was the early 11:30 AM band

If you're going to a "proper" weekend festival, then get there the day before and set up your tent nice and early, but don't do what I did and forget where it was when after a few beers!!! If you're going to a one day festival, again try and get there as early as possible. I have no idea how big the Melbourne Festival is, but if it anything like the festivals in England look forward to big ques and being far from the stage if you're not early enough!!!!!
