What ever happened to real punk? Where can I find new, old school?!

Question: Buy American Idiot. It's awesome. In the truest sense of the word. They speak volumes in truth. Plus they wear make-up. And one of their cds is named after poop! How punk is that? Oh, wait. . . . you said real punk. Well can't help you with that. I listen to jazz. And not the jazz-punk thing that Jaco tried to start either. So good luck Rebka. By the way my wife says that ska is much better than punk anyway, so there's always that.

out of luck

how about the Rollins band?

In my most honest opinion - when Joey Ramone died, real punk died with him...

Stick to the classics: The Ramones, Dead Kennedys, The Dead Milkmen and throw in some Violent Femmes every so often...

You can't buy "real punk" at a record store. I don't know where you are looking, but if it's beyond your local scene, you are not going to find it. That is what made punk great in the beginning. The different local flavors that existed all over the country. New York had a scene, as did D.C., Southern California, etc etc etc

***Harsh. Well, if you are suffereing from a lack of scene, then try these bands:
The Criminals (google it Criminals Berkeley)
The Frisk
Brain Failure
Scotch Greens

Try Crass,Angelic Upstarts and Sham 69...English
The Minutemen,Fugazi,Black Flag and Dead Kennedies..American
Radio Birdman,Thought Criminals,Celibate Rifles,Saints..Aussie...should get you ticking over
No Merchandise needed.

Punk was like Woodstock. It happened once and will never be repeated. The 70's New York and London punk till the early' 80's D.C. and west coast punk had a purpose and the new "punk" is driven by record sales and image only. However, I will say that their are a few band out there that are good i.e. Rancid, Social Distortion(I know they have been around a while) and a few old school bands with new records, but it still is not ever going to be the same.

Check out a band named Parkway Wretch. They played the warped tour here in AZ and they have that great old school sound but are new. I like them because I had given up on so called Punk for years and they made me realize what I liked about it in the first place. They are on myspace.

Gallows.

New, but very classic-punk with a heavier edge.

No new punk. Just like the emo kids killed nu-metal, I fear they are going to be the nail in the coffin to true punk. Suprisingly, Ive seen a surge of ska bands starting up but cant remember any of their names. Check out Streetlight Manifesto or Planet Smashers, might not be new-new but itll be new to you. Mighty Mighty Bosstones has a new CD out, theyre a hardcore punk/ska band.

Hopefully you already dig Rancid, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, etc.
Try Lars Fredericksen and the Bastards, The Distillers, US Bombs, The Unseen, and anything on Hellcat Records.
How about stuff like Flogging Molly, The Tossers, Dropkick Murphys? Irish punk is always cool.

There's tons of good bands out there, but like Master C said, you're not going to hear them on the radio and you're not going to pick up their album at the local store. You will see them playing in some kid's garage or maybe a gig at a dive bar and order their 7' through the mail. The thing is punk is not one definite style or sound, it's more of the DIY ethos that creates the genre.
