First used in very early 20th century to mean a business affair or an event. Later on it was used in a Jazz reference ( circa 1920's ), there were " gig " bands.....and it must've continued from there

The Oxford Dictionary says it is "early 20th century, of unknown origin", so the answer would appear to be that no-one knows.

The best theory is that it comes from the French word "gigue" meaning "a ball or dance" but if not then it may just be a musical abbreviation.

Gig is the term commonly used by bands with reference to their live shows. Mainly used by smaller bands, the term may become 'show' or 'concert' as the band's popularity increases.
