What is YOUR definition of the difference between......?!

Question: Mainstream and Underground?

(relating to hip hop music:artists/r&b/rap/emcees/producers ect)

YOUR personal definition not the dictionary/wikipedia definition PLEASE.

*There is a HUGE difference but I see some people really arent sure in some of the answers I have been ready from other questions, so just wanted to put it into a question form and see what comes back.*

By Definition, Underground Rap is any rap artist not signed
to a major record label like, G-unit, So So Def or Universal
and Mainstream Rap/Hip Hop is just the opposite.

mainstream- commerical rap, making it big, number 1 album and single, 2x platinum album and things like that, ur song is on tha radio

underground-battle rap, the truth, no commerical rap, tryna make it big, on ur hustle, pushin ur mixtapes or ablums everywhere u go, unknown, not signed

mainstream gets crazy radio play
most mainstream doesnt deviate too far from the same subject matter
mainstream is known by the masses.... im not saying that that is good or bad.. im just saying
mainstream has mega appeal because its publicized to no end
underground standards are way higher than mainstream standards
most underground attracts the incent burners... we know who we are ;)
underground lovers are detailed listeners of lyrics

theres so much that i dont have time to type

HIP HOP STAND UP

...blessings...

I actually don't think there's a big difference. I think that there are really recording artists that are "underground" in the sense that they are not well known or only known in a certain locale. But I see so many groups that people describe as "underground" that are really nothing more that bands on big record labels that maybe aren't as popular.

I think it's become a buzzword that bands used to market themselves, I don't think anyone actually ever sat down and made a definition.

Mainstream, is more fun, light music, the deep hardcore, thought provoking stuff just isn't easy listening for the mainstream radio. So an underground artist can have a mainstream hit, without trying to be mainstream but 9 times out of ten it will be a upbeat track. Just look at the difference between Kweli's Reflection Eternal and Quality, Quality was more mainstream because it was more upbeat a sunnier type of music, even on the deeper tracks. Its like this one kid said to me "I love Nas. but sometimes its just to heavy" If your with it, you flow with it, if its not in your blood stream you feel the waves more, you get me.

MAINSTREAM:CONTROLLED BY GREEDY RACIST RICH MEN.FOR EXAMPLE MTV AND WET(FORMERLY BET)
THESE TWO COMPANIES ARE OWNED BY VIACOM.

UNDERGROUND:CONTROLLED BY THE RICH HONEST PEOPLE.
BABYGRANDE FOR EXAMPLE

Mainstream- Everything that's wrong with music.
Greedy commercial companies
Fake "thugs"
Faker lyrics
Candy beats
Souljah Boy.

Unferground- The REAL life
Under-rated genius's
Real Lyrics
Hard beats

Have you ever noticed it's the actual good rappers/ emcees that are underground, the people that get that big deal with Universal and Pepsi are always the one's who turn out to be faggs.
So **** this fake *** commercial "rap" only in it for the money and to make hits for teenage girls.
