Les Paul and SG's have a different tone
im a fan of SG's, their neck profile is a bit slimmer and the body is a lot lighter. on top of that the double cutaway gives you no trouble accessing those upper frets
Les Pauls are wicked heavy but the tone is a bit different because of the denser wood
The SG burns longer on a cold day. Just kidding. Which is better? It's a matter of taste.
Actually there are many factors. I have owned many of both.
Les Pauls are heavy but they have have better sustain. They tend to stay in tune better because of the way the neck is set as opposed to the SG. The SG is lighter so if the weight is an issue the SG is a better choice. SG's have a different hump in it's tone, a higher frequency than a Les Paul with less of a thickness to it.
Otherwise they are very similar guitars generally speaking.
