When Leaning to play the piano...?!

Question: Im going to purchase a keyboard because I want to learn to play the piano. I was shopping today and was wondering if there was a disadvantage when learning to play if you dont have all 88 keys. I typically found that a keyboard (new) with less than 88 keys was in my price range, though I didnt know if it was unwise to purchase something that didnt have all the keys. Should I wait a little longer and buy one with 88 keys, or is it not neccessary for a novice to have a keyboard with all the keys?

There is no real need of having an 88 key keyboard right now, especially since you are just beginning. When you are first learning piano, all you really do is probably go up 8va down and up, which is going 8 keys up or 8 keys down..

Right now, you can get by without having to splurge your cash on an 88 key keyboard. I am right there with you! They can be very expensive..

I'd say just stick with something that is in your price range, and as you get better in time.. You could get yourself an 88 key keyboard or an actual piano.. when you actually can use all 88 keys.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to tell you this. When I just started taking lessons, I just had a 28 key keyboard and nothing else. It lasted me about a year or so before my teacher suggested I get a bigger keyboard, but I just got an upright piano.

Good luck, and keep on jammin'.

It may not be necessary for a beginner to have the piano with all 88 keys! In about a year's time, you would be at a stage in your training and practice, when you may decide finally if you are going to pursue the piano music seriously: and, that would be the time to get yourself a full-fledged piano, and that's the time you really start enjoying your budding mastery over the keys! Good luck, happy music hours!

this will do just fine for a beginner
