well it's apparently about the movie "Dawn Of the Dead" [1978 version] and if you haven't seen that movie; the themes are pretty similar to what's going on in this song, it's great to see the connection =]

ANYWAY.. heres my [v. long] interpretation of the song and how it's like a love story, where the love has died and the inevidable happens. Relationships can seem so perfect, even when there is a harsh reality about to creep up on you.

The first verse kinda introduces this,by explaining how his perfect relationship with this girl is almost like a fantasy 'just like my favourite scenes' and then how he knows he's in an ordinary world [elavators and half price sales] but he's so caught up in his love for her he's 'running away and hiding with..' escaping the fate of what happens in the next verse i guess.
then it goes on and evidently, [gerard] is doubtful to whether the girl he's singing about is really in love with him anymore, it seems as if their love has died, her heart no longer loves him she's dead now because the love is gone "And if I had the guts to put this to your head" I think that means that since she doesn't have an undying love in her heart for him, he'll have to kill her but it's hard because he once loved her too and still does to this point. But then he says: "But would anything matter if you're already dead?" Because she is already dead, her heart has died of the love she once had for him, and he finds it hard to part with it. Then the line 'her eyes vacant and stained' proves that yes she's gone, dead of love, it's right for her to be killed rather than staying a body without an alive heart. Furthermore the line "And in saying you loved me ,Made things harder at best, And these words changing nothing, As your body remain" pretty much sums it up -their love is really dead, no denying it. her heart and soul has died all that remains is her body so he has to kill her for both of their sakes.
And then it goes on, the verse repeating as he struggles to say goodbye to her, after all he loves her and he knows killing her dead heart is what's best for her it's like a promise. "our memories deafeat us, And I'll end this direst"
So then she's gone, he's kept his promise of 'love til death' kinda thing.
The verse goes on until the end, "And there's no room in this hell, There's no room in the next, But does anyone notice there's a corpse in this bed?"
There's no room for their undefying love, it's dead. she's dead he had to kill her or put her out of her misery, because without their love they were nothing.

It's a beatiful song really, quite touching, that's my interpretation. It's kinda like with vampires, i always thought it could have been associated with it the line : "Not knowing you'd change from just one bite" not knowing she'd stop loving him from something, i suppose the bite from a vampire would be too literal, anyway it's like vampires you have to kill them once their heart is gone, their soul is no longer there [can u stake my heart -sound familiar?].

hope u enjoyed that! xD
good luck whichever way you interpret this song, it's still beautiful.

it's based on dawn of the dead....
