Open E string problems?!

Question: I just replaced the E string on my guitar (Fender Squier with Guitar Boomer strings) and the E string sounds very twangy when I play it open. And for some reason it sounds perfectly fine when I play a fret. I tuned it but it still sounds twangy. Any Ideas why? and how would I fix it?

How old were your previous strings? If they were old and crusty, and you're using the old sound as a reference, that may be the problem. New strings are much brighter sounding than old dirty ones.

If that's not the case, you may have problems with the nut, and you should get it looked at. Or you may have inadvertently switched string gauges, and all of a sudden it's too big or small for the groove in the nut. One thing that may help is if you stick a very small piece of paper in between the string and the nut. It might take out some of the twang anyway.

Edited to add:

Ahh, I didn't see that you only changed one string. It's almost definitely the case that your other strings are all old. You should always, as the poster below said, change all your strings at the same time. And don't wait until they get old.

it is probably because they are new strings and u were sooo used to the old strings that the new ones sound different i would say play the string alot

You should always change all your strings not just one
or you will warp your neck
