Motown was much more successful, but Atlantic/Stax had all the best music - if you listen to it.
I believe that a lot of Motown's success came from a really good marketing technique that Atlantic/Sax didn't have.

Motown on balance, but what a tough question.

The likes of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T, and the Staple Singers do add up to a pretty powerful case for Stax.

In terms of sheer musical classics generated, Motown wins, but that's partly because a greater quantity of high-cailbre artists have come under their wings.
