It has no real meaning.

It was basically a huge joke by John Lennon, aimed at people who tried to over-analyse Beatles lyrics in search of some "deeper meaning".

The lyrical style is influenced by Lewis Carroll, whom John admired. It mirrors Carroll's poems like "Jabberwocky" by being both highly surreal and having its own language ("see how they snied")

It was also influenced by, ummmmm, illegal substances : )

For the many theories around the song, including the one that Paul was "the walrus", see:

try the website songmeanings.com. it gives a bunch of people's different opinions on what they think certain songs are about.

Lennon was purposefully trying to confuse people who were trying to analyze his lyrics. Um, plus he was taking a lot of acid.

Why search for meaning or what about.
IMO lyrics could be a dream sequence; or meditation sequence. Rumor has it he was drugged..but no drugged person could come up with such clever and delirious wordplay.
Just enjoy it!

Great song.... but it's about NOTHING!
(Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dogs eye" indeed!)

The 60's was a period where rock music was basically in the same kind of "movement" as painting was around the turn of the century.
So, a lot of experimentation was going on, in the name of "abstract art" in music also.
Hence, not only the absurd lyrics, but the recording techniques used for a lot of music.
There was quite a bit of competition going on around that time for what band could come up with the next "new sound", and needless to say, the Beatles were on the cutting edge of that, many thanks to record producer George Martin.
The stuff you hear at the end of that song is a good example of what I'm talking about.
Pretty wild stuff, eh?
