Have you heard Bach's Fugue in G minor?!

Question: What do you think of it?

Answers: What do you think of it?

It's Awesome!!!! We played it 2 years ago with 2 cellos and 2 basses.... :D

The "Little" fugue in G minor is a masterpiece - I assume that's the one you mean? If so, I really enjoy that work.

Haven't heard it for a long time.
I tried to find a free score to download but couldn't, so I clicked on a couple of videos of performances of the fugue.

Would you like a technical analysis of the fugue?
I can't guarantee that this is right, but this is the best I can do just by listening.

We hear the opening subject in g minor in the soprano.
Next is the answer in d minor in the alto.
There is a delay, which means that the next voice answers later than expected.
During this delay, we make a brief excursion in Eb major.
(A lowered supertonic in a minor key is called a "Neopolitan sixth.")
Next is the answer in g minor in the tenor.
Last is the answer in d minor in the pedals.
That's the exposition.

After an episode, or modulating passage, we hear a stretto in g minor.
One voice plays the subject again, then another voice answers, but answers sooner than in the exposition.

After another episode, the tenor plays the subject in the relative major key of Bb major.
The bass answers, also in Bb major.

After another episode, the soprano plays the subject in c minor.

After one last episode, we hear the subject one last time in the tonic.
One organist pulls out all the stops and plays this section good and loud, the other organist doesn't.
The whole composition ends on a G major chord instead of a g minor chord.
(This is called a "Picardy third.")

It is difficult to write a fugal theme which is adaptable to a stretto.
It is also difficult to write a theme which sounds good in both major and minor.
The only other example I can of is the second theme from the first movement of Mozart's g minor symphony.
We hear that theme first in Bb major and later in g minor.

It's alright
