You can't do it for free legally.
The music artists earn a living by charging money for their music. If you get it free, that is the same as stealing. I know this view will not make me popular, but it happens to be the truth.
Also, I read that iTunes are reducing their prices soon. You can play them on other machines by burning an audio CD, and ripping it back in your chosen format.
