Emo means emotional. Any bands that sing about kids being so cruel and high school was so hard, and a girl just broke up with me lets have a group cry, and I might be bi-sexual because that makes me different, and I want to do anything that makes me different, but when people make fun of me because I am different I am going to cry and sing about how life is so bad, and how I continplated suicide because life is so hard, and I love this girl but she is popular and I am a loser so she doesnt love me back, and I am going to be straight edge because all the other kids are doing drugs but I dont want to be like them, lets go to the thrift store and buy some clothes so we can draw attention from people, but pretend that we dont want attention, and then when people make fun of us we will have a good group cry, and then go into a mild depression and then tell people how hard life it, but most importantly cry yourself to sleep.
If a song has any of this content in it, it is probably emo.
who cares what ppl think. if u like the music, then let that be the only opinion that counts.

Emo is the shortened term for "Emotional Hardcore." It's a hard style of music, derived from punk, with vocals that reflect themes of an (you guessed it) emotional nature (ie breakups, deaths, births, etc). It doesn't necessarily all have to be sad and depressing, just any occurrence that gets you riled up.
There have been three waves of Emo in it's history. 2 of which are real. The first wave started with Fugazi and many other bands birthed of the punk scene. They played the same music, but it was the subject matter of the lyrics that separated them.
The second wave came with bands like Jimmy Eat World. They were more marketable on the mainstream because they softened the sound, and added a little more melody.
The third wave doesn't really exist. It's just a buzz word used to define the current batch of popular rock artists. So if you listen to AFI, Linkin Park, Killswitch Engage, or Fallout Boy (all bands I've seen defined as emo) then you probably aren't emo. Your just mainstream.
If the people who are defining emo for you, usually use the word "random" do describe anything....they don't know what they are talking about.

emo music really is just a stupid name haters gave it. emo means emotional, and emo is another word for the kids who cut theirselves and cry all the time. i listen to so called "emo" music too, examples can be almost anything from Fall Out Boy to Dance Gavin Dance to Paramore. Don't worry about it, dude, stick to what you love with me. emo is just a weird stereotype nowadays.

emo bands usually have sudden emotional bits in their songs
as me being a former emo aswell park way drive,sensis fail,my dying bride,tatu,aqua,i killed the prom queen,the getaway plan and funeral for a freind are just some of the bands im into any thing that floats ur boat and technicaly any music is emo because we have mixed emotions tending to our music and and every emotions is a part of bein emo!
