roger dean's work for yes was a major force. Tales from topagraphic oceans, close to the edge, relayer. i agree also with iron maiden. " eddie" was as big as the group.

Pink Floyd has had some of the best album covers ever. A Momentary Lapse of Reason , Wish You Were Here, and the Division Bell come to mind. The Smashing Pumpkins had winners with Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Machina and when you think about the fact that Led Zeppelin's debut album has a picture of the Hindenburg going up in flames, that's pretty wild. The Hindenburg had tragically crashed only 32 years earlier and when you think about it, that would be like using a pic of the Challenger explosion nowadays or of using the World Trade Center in like 30 years.
~EDIT~ A guy below mentioned Tool and they've consistently had amazing album covers and packaging.
I would have to say that my chemical romance and evanescence have really great album covers....and the lead singers have drawn art for at least one of their albums....The Open Door (evanescence) cover was originally a drawing by amy lee that they made into a photoshoot and Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is a drawing by gerard way ( I think lol...don't shoot me if it isn't)

"Miss Machine" by The Dillinger Escape Plan
The artwork for this album is very different and interesting, and has an interesting statement to make about society's view on woman's role.
Also the artwork for "Ire Works" (Their newest album) is rather interesting in it's almost minimalistic feel. The artwork for the inset has rather interesting hidden messages and everything too.
