What is the only modern orchestral instrument of Western European origin?!

Question: Well, all the flutes came form other cultures, or were simultaneously found there. Same with oboe and bassoon, and single reeds. I would say the English horn - if you did not limit to the orchestra, then the most obvious choice would be saxophones.

Brass - ancient Rome. If someone wants to nitpick about rotary valves on the French horn, OK. All the percussion - also seen in other cultures. Strings - OK< the shape of modern strings was eventually refined in Italy and France - many basses still use old-shape Italian shoulders instead of French.

If we consider TUNED percussion - then you coudl argue for the piano - and the celeste most DEFINITLEY came up later. Whcih leads to the glass harmominca - whcih was not used in much orchestral music except some Mozart. Theremin? Ruaains, and not used in MANY orchestral works, but some - liek the ondes martenot.

I think you have teacher whho is asking a very controversial question - or you are just really curious by nature!

For Western music, this is true. But there are musical instruments all over the world.
