Good Morning :) It's getting really cold here!

Hopefully I'll have more time today to contribute a bit more to Y!A than I have lately. I've been real busy at work. Anyway though, to answer your question:

Peter Frampton (also a member of The Herd)
Billy Squier (Piper)
John Waite (The Babys, Bad English)
Phil Collins (Genesis)
Peter Gabriel (Genesis)
Paul Simon (Kiss)
Rod Stewart (Faces, and Jeff Beck Group)
Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
Tom Petty (The Heartbreakers)
Bob Seger (Silver Bullet Band)
Eric Clapton (Creme)

There are tons more that I can't think of right now. Maybe they will come to me later.

Steve Winwood came out of Traffic.

Chris Connelly emerged from Revolting C**ks, although the degree of "making it" is somewhat subjective. In my world, he was the s**t.

Morrissey did OK for himself after ditching The Smiths.

tina turner from ike and tina belinda carlyle from gogos sting from police

Sting - Police

Neil Young (CSNY)
Rod Stewart (Faces)
Ozzy (Black Sabbath)

sting that came out of the police

John Lennon- The beatles
Eric Clapton- Cream
Stevie Nicks- Fleetwood Mac

David Lee Roth
John Lennon / Paul McCartney

Joan Jett (originally in The Runaways)
OZZY (We all know his first band...lol)
Dave Grohl (Ditto the above statement) :)
Kim Deal (Pixies...then her own band The Breeders)

all 4 beatles,
feargal sharkey (undertones)
phil collins (genesis)
ice t (nwa)
norman cook --aka fat boy slim (housemartins)
robbie williams (take that)

Stevie Nicks!

With the best ones taken, I'll go with:
Belinda Carlisle from the Go-Gos
Gwen Stefani from No Doubt
Fergie from The Blackeyed Peas
Steve Perry from Journey (only made momentarily, though with 'Oh Sherry') ;(
Everlast from House of Pain
Rob Zombie from White Zombie

John Lennon or Michael Jackson are the MAJOR ones that I could think of.

Daryl Palumbo could basically do anything he wants. I think he started Head Automatica by himself at the beginning.

When Andrew McMahon left SoCo and started Jack's Mannequin. he was kinda solo, then got bigger than he was in SoCo.

Casey from The Receiving End Of Sirens left and started The Dear Hunter by himself....Which I think is better than TREOS is now.\

Justin Timberlake is another big one.

Dustin Kensrue from Thrice

Most people covered what I know. I'll add Hank III to the mix though. He was in Superjoint Ritual.

Justin Timberlake - Nsync
Fergie- Black Eyed Peas
Paul Simon- Simon and Garfunkle
Nick Lachey - 98 degrees
Geri Hollowell - spice girls
Beyonce - Destiny's Child
Nick Carter - Backstreet Boys
i know theres more, ill add when i think of them...

Trying not to duplicate any answers...

I'd say David Coverdale did alright for himself after leaving Deep Purple. Granted, it wasn't as a solo artist, but Whitesnake was always more about Dave than anything else.

Robert Plant has had a successful solo career.

Sammy Hagar was on a steady climb to the top once he left Montrose, only to bolster that even more by joining Van Halen.

Don Henley has won Grammy's for his solo work.

Glenn Hughes has had a very long, if not neccessary popular, career since leaving Deep Purple.

Billy Idol didn't miss a beat from his punk band days, and the name of said band just escapes me at the moment.

I promise you that Yngwie Malmsteen doesn't miss his days in the band Alcatraz.

John Waite never had a #1 until he left The Babys in the early 80s.

NP: "Don't Call Me Baby, Baby" - Kill Cheerleader

ect. ect.

Annie Lennox {Eurythmics}

Eric Clapton {Cream, the last of several he was in}
Alan Price {The Animals}
Phil Collins {Genesis}
Joe Walsh {The Eagles}
Don Henley {The Eagles}

Edit :~
Greg R :
The Fleetwood Mac ones are slightly subjective.
Christine McVie has never had a hit single in the UK {and only her 1984 album charted, at No.58}
Lindsey Buckingham's only hit here was in 1982, and it got to No.31, and the album reached No.51}

If you asked a random group of people about solo careers of Fleetwood Mac members, the majority would only mention Stevie Nicks.

Steve Vai, and many others, came from Frank Zappa's band.

Dave Grohl- Nirvana

Serj tankian-system of a down

Eddie vedder came out with a solo song but i don't pearl jam will ever die

Ozzy Osbourne from Black Sabbath
Sting from The Police
Peter Gabriel from Genesis
Phil Collins from Genesis
John Lennon from The Beatles
Paul McCartney from The Beatles
Audioslave (from Soundgarden and RATM)
Velvet Revolver (from STP and GnR)
Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl from Nirvana)
Rob Zombie from White Zombie

Lots of obvious ones missed here:

Lindsay Buckingham-Fleetwood Mac (Christine McVie and Bob Welch also managed 1 solo hit apiece..)

It may be cheating since they're a "supergroup" but obviously David Crosby, Steven Stills, and Graham Nash had solo work of their own outside CSNY

Besides Phil Collins, Genesis' Mike Rutherford also scored a hit or two with his own band Mike and the Mechanics

Chicago's Peter Cetera had some 80s solo hits.

Sonny Bono had a solo hit outside Sonny and Cher. And Cher obviously has had solo hits from the 70s through the 90s and still records on her own.

ALL the Spice Girls have had solo albums (not just Geri) though no one's had a solo hit (at least in the U.S.)

Besides Justin, JC Chasez and 1 other N-Sync member (blanking out right now) had minor solo hits..

Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey also had solo hits outside the Eagles...J.D. Souther managed 1 hit with "You're Only Lonely"

Country star Vince Gill got his start with country-rock act Pure Prairie League

Christian rocker was once bassist for 70s southern rock outfit The Outlaws

Christian pop act Joe English Band featured the drummer for Paul McCartney and Wings

These just scratch the surface...you could do these types of lists all day long...

Neil Young (Buffalo Springfield)
Steven Stills (Buffalo Springfield)
David Crosby (The Byrds and CSNY)
Bob Mould (Husker Du and Sugar)
Richard Thompson (Fairport Convention)
Steve Earle (The Dukes)
Tom Petty (Mudcrutch)
Mike Nesmith (The Monkees)
Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead)

John Lennon
Paul McCartney
Ozzy

Billy Idol - Generation X
Norman Cook - The Housemartins (People know him better as Fatboy Slim)
Henry Rollins - S.O.A & Black Flag
Iggy Pop - The Stooges
Lou Reed - Velvet Underground
Paul Simon - Simon & Garfunkel
Paul Westurburg - The Replacements
Frank Black - The Pixies
Lionel Richie - The Commodores
Diana Ross - The Supremes

Flavor Flav -Public Enemy (He might not have a career in music but who thought a 40-something year old crackhead would be doing this much)

Whoops, looks like I duplicated a few. Sorry...........

David Lee Roth from Van Halen

EDIT - had same as everyone else due to poor typing skills... stickin with DLR

2nd EDIT - Darnit - Dave already had it - i give up....

jerry cantrell - i think he's from alice in chains, i'm not sure though.
dave grohl - used to be in nirvana

Couple more here I don't think have been mentioned.

Possibly a lesser known fact:
Jackson Browne spent some time with a group called Soft White Underbelly who later became Blue Oyster Cult.

One hit wonder? Thomas Dolby (Blinded Me with Science) played keyboards with Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club and The Thompson Twins. Popular side gigs included playing keys with Def Leppard and Foreigner, not forgetting his work with now world famous industrial musician, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame in The "Exotic Birds".

And an addition to rckets answer:
Winwood was also a member of The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith and Go.
