Dynamic marking?!

Question: I play the flute in a school band, and on one of the songs the dynamic marking has a small "s" then a larger "f" and "p" next to eachother, so it says "sfp". I know that f means forte (loud) and p means piano (soft). However, I have no idea what "s" means, and why forte and piano are right next to eachother. If you could help, please do.

Hi!
sfp is the dynamic marking for sforzando, what the dynamic marking sfp means is, a sudden strong emphasis (accent). It literally means in Italian "forced" Stay in Band and keep practicing! I sang and was in choir until I graduated High School. Music is so important and playing in the the school band has so many benefits! Keep it up! :)

The notation sfp indicates a sforzando followed immediately by piano.
Sforzando- with sudden emphassis

Hope it helps!
