on my first day I thought it was really weird, but then I got used to the different setup and instrumentation and it was fun. If you're planning on being in a jazz band, it would be really helpful to go through and play all your major and minor scales, and be familiar with the notes in those scales, then you can have an idea of what you're doing when you improv. Also listening to jazz helps alot.

i do, i play lead trombone. its fun because you can be creative. the most important things are set up and style. if you have all the appropriate players (5 saxes, 4 bones, 4 trumpets and at least a 3 piece rhythm section) (for big band, anyway) you are off to a good start. secondly, the stylistic choices your director makes can be hip, or not.
