Blues Trivia:Who claimed to have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads?!

Question: Tommy Johnson

Answers: Tommy Johnson

Robert Johnson....

Robert Johnson was a young black man living on a plantation in rural Mississippi. Branded with a burning desire to become a great blues musician, he was instructed to take his guitar to a crossroad near Dockery’s plantation at midnight. There he was met by a large black man (the Devil) who took the guitar from Johnson, tuned the guitar so that he could play anything that he wanted, and handed it back to him in return for his soul. Within less than a year’s time, in exchange for his everlasting soul, Robert Johnson became the king of the Delta blues singers, able to play, sing, and create the greatest blues anyone had ever heard.

ROBERT JOHNSON

Robert Johnson. His guitar playing was so good that many OTHER people said he sold his soul to the devil for his talent, but HE never claimed that.

Ironically, he died in a town called Crossroads.

And to "Atrocious truth" up there .....his stuff is blues, dear. Don't believe me? Have a listen:

Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for musical genius. I believe the crossroads were US 61 and US 49 in the state of Mississippi

George Bush!!LOL

Seriously it was Robert Johnson

Rocky has it correct.

Most people mistakenly attribute the story to Robert Johnson because of his famous track "Crossroad Blues".

However, in Robert's track, he sings about hitching a ride. It is the earlier Tommy Johnson recording in which Tommy Johnson sings about dealing with the devil.

Like a lot of blues mythology, the stories became blended and the more famous bluesman got the credit for the legend.

Tommy Johnson is correct.
