Ambitious usually means that their songwriting takes in big concepts and stylistic influences. It can sometimes be a polite way of saying that they're overreaching in their ideas, though.

Creative means that they like to play with concepts and styles and don't just bash through the M.O.R. stuff that is easy or popular.

Energetic means that they display a lot of energy, either on stage or sonically through their recordings.

These three words remind me of one band, At The Drive-In.

It means they suck, in a polite way.

ambitious: having a strong desire for success or achievement

creative: having the ability or power to create; "a creative imagination"

energetic: working hard to promote an enterprise

Maybe it means they are going places, or have the potential to go places.

those words will have the same meaning in just about any title, not just metal (which i love). you can apply the meaning of those words in any subject matter..

energetic-full of energy (illuminate or capture an audience)
creative-be like no one else (be unique)
ambitious-the will power and want to succeed(have the drive)

Ambitious - Not afraid to go to the places where no one has gone regardless of sales and money and popularity

Creative - Doing something that has never been done, wether it be on stage or in a song or anything

Energetic - Giving the crowd and fans that feeling of amazement when they hear them come on stage.

The band that came to my mind when i read this were Motley Crue because they were always thinking up new ways to defy gravity on stage and they def. were energetic and abitious.

The other band i thought of was Slayer because they are creative with their stage presence, especially during the song Raining Blood and if you have ever seen them live you know they are energetic lol.

And the final band that came to mind is Pantera. I saw them one time only (cause a few weeks later Dimebag was killed :(...... ) but they were creative with all their lyrics and guitar work and every aspect of it and they had an enormous ammount of energy and ambitious describes them in one word.

a couple of bands that you would like would be trivium. and dragonforce. they have pretty fast riffs, and they are always playing really really fast. so if you are looking for something like that then check them out. im sure you would like them

ambitious - the desire to get a point accross without making 'protest music'

creative - making a new style sound familiar or an old style sounds new

energetic - making the hair on ya neck stand up when you hear an opening riff

think i just described rage against the machine :)

it they're trying 2 rock but it just isn't what it should be! if they're good they should just ROCK OUT!!!!

Guns N' Roses came to my mind.
And so did The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Marilyn Manson.
Alice Cooper.

Any band that can astound you with their concert is creative and if they really sell that ****, then they are energetic. The ambitious part, really depends. If they continue to make records and pull through no matter what, they are ambitious.

Honestly, I don't know of many creative metal bands. So much of metal is a formula - detune your instruments, scream, play stutter-stop rhythms or blat beats, and make sure not to play in too major a key - preferably phrygian, locrian, etc.

Yawn. Give me something with a melody.

Kind've a generic question, isn't it? Why do you care who the term applies to? Is it because you feel that "emo" bands or "nu-metal" bands can't be ambitious, or creative, or energetic? Who says that mainstream bands can't be creative, or ambitious, etc.?

In fact, isn't it you are who labelling and categorizing from the get-go, trying to find someone who will agree to your preconceived notions of what makes one band "creative" but not a different one?

I smell the rank stench of elitism.

Do you think Radiohead is mainstream? They're creative, they released an album on a "pay what you want" basis online. Millions of people know about them. Is that too many, or are they saved by being creative? Or does financial success negate a band's cred, in your mind?

Remember, you asked to define ambitious... and then a few sentences later say not to include bands who have made it big - in other words, bands who have realized their ambition.
