Is it possible to be to lyrical? ....If so please provide an example...?!

Question: I heard someone who really listens to hip hop say that there are times when artists are too lyrical....he provided examples from Talib Kweli and Lupe......I myself take the time to research the words that I dont understand and study the concepts and theories provided in songs...it takes a little extra time but the results are beyond satisfying....Let me know what you think.

Well in my opinion Lupe and Talib Kweli are great. Definitely not too lyrical. But I can see where this person was coming from. Sometimes rappers go over board with it and it can get redundent and annoying. But his examples were wack cuz lupe and kweli are amazing

Yeah it can get kind of boring and rappers write dumb **** just keep up with the rhyme scheme

i think that depends on ur taste in music in a previous question i said something of the sort and i got bashed hard about it i think its a matter of the KIND of hip hop u choose to listen to if u prefer deep lyrical content then its perfect and u can never be too lyrical if u prefer straight to the point hip hop then yes it is too lyrical and for some poeple its just a matter of what artists u like

Lyrical heavy hip hop natural appeals to a smaller number of listeners. So, I think if you are comparing a Lupe or Talib to a Fiddy or Soulja boy the lyrical artist might have the better lyrics and deliver, but because of the lack of funding behind the lyrical rapper (from a label), they won't have big name production and radio spins. So, the argument is content over sales. If you are judging by content, Lupe and Talib win, if you are judging by sales and popularity more mainstream hip hop artist win.

I don't think so. If you don't know what they're talking about then they are giving you a chance to learn something. That's what hip hop is for me. A chance to expand myself through others' expression of self. If anyone feels an m.c. is too lyrical........Read a book!!!!

that's dumb to say an artist understanding of words , is what makes them true to the art, some people are to simple is the problem, Talib and Lupe are refreshing in game when artist are just sayin AAAA or G unit , to fill empty space, some people listen to hip hop for the wrong reasons , and have to be dumb down to enjoy , I think that alot of these artist should find a thesaurus and pick up their game but that 's just my opinion , GGGG G unit , I lost my train of thought LOL

that's impossible...I mean..I listen to stuff where I gotta have a dictionary/encyclopedia in front of me, cuz it's so complex..but that s hit's hot tho..

Its possible for people with small vocab's

some artists def specialize in better lyrics.. some tell a story (Joe Budden has a couple fire tracks like this) and others are self-hype verses (like Canibus or Gza) who use complex metaphors..

That's impossible. Lyrics is what we need.
