Why is the South killing Hip-Hop? Talent is gone and the same material is covere!

Question: It's a shame...the South (not only them but mostly them) is killing hip hop with snap music and other tracks that involve a specific dance. This is not what hip hop is about. The South is making hip hop seem like this stupid music genre where people just do drugs and act like goons all day dancing. I mean Jesus...it's to the point where I can make a hit if I were down there. Give me a known artist, a decent beat and I'll write out all the dumb lyrics and people will love it. Seriously...hip hop wasn't always about hoes, cars, chains, grillz, how big your rims are or any of that. The South is making people who love hip hop embarrassed, because of the current lack of talent coming from the mainstream hip hop (mostly the South) and lack of originality. Being a New Yorker, I like real lyrics...stuff you can think about and live your life by. Hip hop in NY isn't about grillz and all that it's about getting through everyday life. If you want to know what I mean see Talib Kweli that's real.

I happen to agree with you. Other than a select few out there right now...most of the great hip-hop artists aren't really doing what is neccesary to keep hip-hop intelligent.

Even with the anger....Ice-T, NWA, Public Enemy and 2Pac still made you think, had a point to what they were saying in their music...and it was still fun to dance to on a Friday or Saturday night.

Even MC Hammer is better than 95% of today's rap stars.

Soulja Boy...Bow Wow.....theese guys have no idea what hip hop is about. They've lost it in the quest to show who the biggest "pimp" or "thug" is...and forgotten that hip-hop, even gansta rap...was political...was spiritual...was sexual....was offensive...but it always had a point to it.

Today's hip hop artists...they need to go to school. Somewhere where Grandmaster Flash, Big Daddy Kane, Ice-T, Dr. Dre, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, MC Hammer, Salt n' Peppa, Naughty By Nature, Snoop Dogg, Afrikaa Bambataa, Da Brat, Kool Moe Dee, Beastie Boys and Jay-Z can all school them on what hip-hop truelly is. (It makes me wish 2Pac and Biggie were still alive....so they could put a stop to this travesity).

Don't get me wrong, I know all music goes in cycles...but this cycle of "who's the biggest pimp" rap...is going to kill rap dead if it doesn't get under control, and the artists start to remember where they came from.

Hip hop is almost dead. Just look at talentless idiots like soulja boy topping the charts.

I wish Hip Hop and everything that it associates with dies faster. It only puts fuel on the fire of all the black people trying to get out of the sterotype that we are ghetto people that do nothing but curse smoke weed and do nothing but take money. When we do get money however we spend it on our hoes and putting big rims on our car. That music tells white people hey I have a nice car! Feed my kids this month? Hell the government can do that. It is very embarrassing. It shows that black people have not evolved into a real American culture from all the gang violence exhibited in their lyrics to the improper use of english. It shows all we can do is sing or talk really fast improperly and dance incredibly disgusting. BET is one of the main channels that presents this type of music it gives black people or I hate to use the phrase black community a bad name.

I have heard of good hip hop but since it has become an overwhelming evil to American society I hope it dies and enjoys burning in hell.

I feel you...but people like you are doing just as much damage to hip hop. I was born in 1987. My mom used to put earphones on her pregnant belly and let me listen to LL Cool J. I've always loved hip hop so I can understand your frustration, but blaming it on others (especially a whole region of the country) doesn't help. I'm a student @ Howard University so I've met people from everywhere. Real Southern music is not snap music. Listen to some UGK (old or new)...or some old Outkast...hell, listen to some Scarface. They represent the south. ANYONE from the south will tell you that the dance music thats got so hot a couple of years ago is not how they really are. I know it seemed like ATL took over the whole rap scene and ruined but thats not even the case. Most of the people who came up with that music weren't even born in Atlanta. They just took what was poppin in the clubs and brought it to a national level. Rappers like Ludacris and Jeezy represent the real altlanta folk. Even if you don't like their music, you know its not snap music. Since he came Luda has been about party music, but he has never made a dance song in his life. Jeezy originally rapped about his struggle, then he rapped about getting to a level of success he never dreamed about, now he raps about how he spends his money and he plans on making more.

Also, hip hop isn't that old. Its impossible and a little naive to think that it was never going to change. The whole point of the genre was to show the country a reflection of black life. Since black people exist in every part of this country, then it only makes sense that hip hop would reflect those parts at some point in time. The west coast is a great example. They made hip hop hardcore, and got credit for something they didnt even create. The west coast was known for only coming out with hood music that told a gritty tale. Now look at them...they're all about getting hyphy and going dumb.

Yea, NY is the birthplace of hip hop, but its not the birthplace of what hip hop represents. I can understand that NY is pissed that their "child" has strayed away from more serious issues. But you also have to look at the difference in life on the East Coast and down south. As a person who's from the East Coast, I can tell you its two different worlds. NY, Philly, Jersey are harder to live in. Not because of the environment, or even violence, but because of the general disposition of people. Yea, yall live hard lives...and yall let everybody know it. Down south, people smile at you more, they worry a little less, and enjoy life a little more. The music reflects that...yea its out of control now, but thats just because record companies pay for, and advertise, music that know will sell. Talib Kweli is amazing, but he's been in the game forever and most people still dont know who he is.

Everything sucks that makes it to the pop charts. Listen to Mr. Lif or El-P or EPMD or the new Wu Tang album and tell me that rap is dead. I think it's way better that rap has moved underground, means that no one can sell out and that it's all legitimate talent.

What's killing music is producers and dumbasses who think that pop equals good.

Quote from the RZA

This is the perfect time for us to come back; the stars are aligned. It's like when we first started with Steve. We put out real hip-hop at a time when it was turning into pop or R&B. We brought the focus back to the music in its rawest form, without studio polish or radio hooks.... People want something that gives them an adrenaline rush. We're here to supply that fix. How could hip-hop be dead if Wu-Tang is forever? We're here to revive the spirit and the economics and bring in a wave of energy that has lately dissipated

I don't know what you're talking about.

CunninLynguists

Ok fine, most of the South sucks. So what, I don't let that bother me because I don't listen to it.

mayne, u mayb ryt buh dere r stll some good dirty south rappers, lik chamillionaire. yea buh rappers lik mike jones nd sh!t dey fuk up hip hop real bad.

You New Yorkers need to quit pointing fingers and accept some of the responsibility. Most of EVERY region is garbage right now...PERIOD. If you are not from the South, chances are you only here the commercial side of what we have to offer. I could go down a HUGE list of garbage MC's on the East dating back to when rap started. MIMS is a great example. He flat out said he could make a mil saying nothing on the track. We took our cue from the East. Nobody was complaining when Nas made "Oochiwally." Slick Rick wears more gold than Mr. T and raps about it too. Jay-Z helped UGK get mainstream with "Big Pimpin." I think ya'll are just mad because the East is no longer the dominant force. We heard the same whining about the West when Gangsta Rap emerged.

Edit-Why can't people see that is the radio/market that is killing Hip-Hop. This argument was around before the South was even mainstream. Maybe I should post that question...

The south isnt killing hip hop. "Hip Hop" fans are killing hip hop. As long as you have people willing to buy soulja boy over jay z the south will always be more successful

new york isnt doing much better. its not just the south. all the regions (except Chicago) are basically putting out crap. its not the artist from the south fault that people are downloading their songs and ringtones. its the people for buying the music. the industry is all about making money. you cant blame the artist. why is that hard for people to understand?

lets be real about this i see u got like 7 essay answers but be legit about this the south isnt killing hip hop the only reason u feel like that is because new york aing doing nuthin either people love to blame hip hops probelms on the south but heres the thing southern rappers 9 times out of 10 are just doing them they not worried about chaging hip hop they're having fun rapping they doing i for fun some of them just for the money which is stupid but we aint killing it look at 50 cent hes what killing it cause the south aint doing big numbers HE is so look at ur front runners before u try to tear down those who are really just making feel good music
