The picture looks like a younger image of the mother, and he looks at it for a while before returning to her and getting a group hug.
The moment with him and the picture, I think, means that he's imagining the days where he was her hero for love. When rescuing other things that she loved, he might have been thinking about trying to attempt more as a hero.
