Why do people get upset when others ask if a certain band belongs to a certain g!

Question: I ask a question like "Can 'a certain band' considered 'a certain genre'?" and people's answers are like "Why do you care so much? Just listen to them if you like them or not if you don't."
I asked that question maybe because I want to find similar bands that sound like them! Why do you care?! Why do you care if I care or not?!

they freak out because they don't know, but a lot of people who listen to music either act like music buffs but don't know what they're talking about half the time or are scared to make their answer final because they think they're wrong about what genre it is.

basically it's just ignorance

Because not all artists that have been categorized into a genre can be compared to all the others in that same genre. Some have their own special meaning or magic to any person, genre aside.

It's a mix of ignorance, and the fact that some people just don't care what sub-genre bands fall into. They like generalisation.

A lot of bands and band followers hang their lives on the concept that they belong, tried and true, to the "cause" that their music stands for. For example...when I first heard Weezer from their first album, I said.."emo?" and people got mad at me because I didn't get it somehow. Walks like a duck, talks like a duck, I always say.

I agree, there seems to be a lot of "genre bashers" lately. I don't really understand it. A band being labeled into certain genres helps when you're looking for similar bands. There seems to be two kinds of bashers, those that dont like that there are so many genres, and those that think whatever band does not fit in a certain genre. But all the while some of these same people use terms like Classic Rock, Heavy Metal, Grunge......aren't those genres too....I say don't use genres anynmore, just call it Music, or maybe thats too specific, just refer to it as "sound that is pleasing to the ear".

I think it is a valid question. The problem I have is people just get too sensitive if you say the wrong genre. For instance, blink 182 is punk rock>? holy mother you'll get your head ripped off. I say hey its just a genre get over yourselves/

Chill dude! I know what question you're referring to and my answer was....
Melodic Metal? Maybe
Melodic Death Metal? Not a chance!

I didn't say I didn't like them because I have a couple of their CD's, I'm just saying they aren't Melodic Death Metal IMOO.

" asked that question maybe because I want to find similar bands that sound like them!"

If you wanted to know similar bands then you should have asked just that instead of asking for an direct opinion about whether a certain band is of a certain genre.

"Why do you care?! Why do you care if I care or not?!"

With an attitude like that you can find your own damn bands!

I don't know, but it's stupid. People say things like, "this band is metal" or "this band is hard rock," and "that band is emo!" What's the big deal? When you really look at the big picture, they're all rock; metal, hard rock, emo, punk, and such are all just subgenres of rock.
