Is the song Hotel Califronia about drugs?!

Question: There origins has to do with one of the band members being in a cult or being involve in a cult. At least thats what I heard inspire it.

My interpretation is that is about addiction. By addiction it doesn't necesarily means drug addiction but it could be. I think is about addiction in general. Drug, gambling, sex, alcohol, coffee, baseball, money, what ever. The story takes place in a hotel but I take it to be either hell or some sort of purgatory. The reason I believe this is because of two scene described in the song. One is the line "you can check out any time you like but you can never leave", To me it means that you can try to get out of your addiction but you will always come back to it. You don't really leave. At least it won't be like before you you got addicted. The other scene is where the guesst tried to kill the beast with a steel knife but couldn't. To me it means that is something so strong that a mere knife is not going to take care of it. yet another line says "Some dance to remember, some dance to forget". I have heard this reference in regards to alcohol and other drugs. Some people say they drink to forget. Others say that some drugs makes them see things clearly etc etc. There is also the line that says "we are all just prisoners here, of our own device". So, what is your device? or should I say viced? You are in the hell that you created for yourself. If you commit a crime then you go to prison and pay for that. If you are in a n abusive relationship you live in your own kind of hell which is different from the guy who can't quit betting and owes money to the mob. Both of them live in different hells. Yet it is still hell never the less.

I think that's one of the interpretations but I have always pictured it to be about a wh*re house. There is many interpretations of the song

i've been told that.
and that its also about a wh*re house.

but idk for sure.

I've heard that it is about the satanic church, but then again the person that told me that was hiiiiiigh lol.

There are many urban legends about the meaning of this metaphor . The song is generally thought to be about the hedonism and self-destruction in the Hollywood music industry. The idea is that the song compares the culture of fame and excess to a luxury hotel. Though initially welcoming its guests with unlimited pleasure, it is merely a guise and ends up trapping its residents through their own self-destructive actions. Hence, the line, "we are all just prisoners here, of our own device."

No, but it has drug use in it. Its a song about materialism and wanting to leave a that lifestyle. But once you enter that lifestyle its hard to leave.

every eagles song is about drugs are you kiddin

i dont think i ever herd that song before

Don Henley in the London Daily Mail November 9, 2007 said: "Some of the wilder interpretations of that song have been amazing. It was really about the excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew. But it was also about the uneasy balance between art and commerce." if you wanna believe that

I agree with the Hollywood metaphor but you gotta figure that they were on *something* when they wrote it - it's so out there! So maybe not directly all about drugs (though there's plenty of it that's destructive in Hollywood).. it's certainly influenced *by* drugs!

STEVIE B nailed it!

i've heard that but who knows
