You gotta watch the movie Pink Floyd The Wall to understand, it is when he is drug addicted, has people come in and give him some more just to be able to go on stage. The machine represents his talents being taken advantage of and chopped up in the machine, the world. His manager would rather give him more drugs than really help him, because that would stop the money machine from producing for the benefit of all the parasites attached onto the host who makes all the money. Meanwhile, he slips further and further into psychosis, it's a great movie if you've never checked it out. Explains everything in a visual collage about where the music is coming from.
