Is It Acceptable To Download Songs From Limewire...?!

Question: ...when you already own the song on another format, i.e. I have a lot of old albums in my collection that I just get to listen to anymore and would like to listen to them again but was wondering where the law stood on this?

I believe if you have already paid for the record and therefore you have paid the royalty for the record then you should be able to download it from a legit source, however limewire is not a legit source and is very VERY illegal. As it stands with limewire I see it as one person paying the royalty and then 'sharing' it with other users, consequently the other users have not paid the royalty, my suggestion is that if you want to listen to records you have paid for rip them onto your own computer, do not upload them to limewire as that is infringing royalty and you yourself could get sued id the company find you, so if you rip the CD onto your own computer (windows media player allows this) then keep your copy safe to prove you have purchased the record then you should be fine.

no it is illegal to download from limewire, limewire has been sued by record companies because limewire users have been downloading songs from limewire

Search out Limewire and read what they have to say.

Do your own research and make an educated decision.

Probably not in the eyes of the law but plenty of people are doing it now including myself so you needn't worry too much. Just don't get caught.

yes its acceptable every one i know does it.

It depends on what you consider to be acceptable, for years I have bought albums on vinyl and some I bought two or three times because the vinyl warped or scratched or whatever, so technically, I am buying the tracks on the album and the vinyl was just the "Wrapping". If I download, tape or record one of these songs which I have already bought and paid for several times over, why should I be penalised because a profits mad organisation, who is not going to refund me for poor quality vinyl or tapes which distorted because you left them on top of the speaker overnight. I don't remember them warning me about that, now that they have the technology to make everyone on the planet pay almost every time they listen to a song.
Subtly, we the record buying public, have been brainwashed into believing that we are thieves, because we taped top of the pops, or copied a record on to tape because the chances are that the first time you put your brand new copy of "Cliff Richards Greatest Hits" on the deck, you would drop the arm and scratch it so bad that it was unplayable. Try and take it back to the shop for a replacement however, and they would laugh at you, I have always thought that was a bit unfair.

My honest answer to you is don't even think about whether it is right or wrong, it is just songs and given the money grabbing entity which the music business is I would lose no sleep over it but that is just me, no doubt the record companies would probably have you executed if they could and lay some guilt about starving musicians on you, there aren't many starving executives I'll bet!. I would however, take care as far as limewire is concerned, because you might download more than music.
I know that I haven't answered your question but you mentioning owning songs on another format touched a nerve with me and I sympathise with your dilemma

It's acceptble.
