Most popular songs have catchy tunes with simple lyrics.
No it does not to be complicated. The same song can mean different things to different people. It depends how they percieve it. Infact most of the "popular #1 songs" are very very simple. Lol.
actually a song just has to suck to be #1, seriously, none of the number 1 songs are actually good...
look at devo's whip it. the guitar in it is super simple i've seen the tabs, same with the rest of the music. even though most people think it is a stupid song with no message there is a message in the lyrics.

No - most people are stupid and wouldn't understand a complicated song if it bit them on the ***. The best thing to do is sell your sould to the pop god's, buy a drum machine, write la la la on a lyric sheet, and get someone to rap over it. You should be fine.
If your dead set opn writing a number 1, you won't write a number 1. Pure and simple.
Song has to have a story/message that makes sense and can be related to. That lyric has to be matched to the right music, the right chord sequence, the right instrumentation, the right tempo, the right voices, the right balancing. More importantly though, if you don't believe in your own lyric, no one else will.
Follow that and you'll have a goos song. Nuber 1? record companies, release dates, what else is being released that week?
You ain't got time to think about chart positions.
