I am a musician myself, played in a rock band for over 15 years. As far as musical talent, I'd have to say Rush. Though I am not a fan, these guys are masters at their craft.
Van Halen or too many to mention one jazz trios.

Ben Folds Five is by far my favorite. Ironically Ben Folds Five only had three musicians in their band. Fronted by Ben Folds himself the band became popular after the release of their song "Brick", a non-confrontational ballad about abortion.
If you need an idea of the sound of Ben Folds, think of pop-rocks with creative and talented piano.
There is nothing that can catch your attention like raw talent can, and Ben Folds is just that- Raw Talent!
